Mount Gay Rum
With busy lives and Father’s Day just around the corner, last minute gifting is now the done thing. After deciding to get him something to consume, I went for spirits, whittled it down to rum, then looked for the best. Mount Gay Rum.
It’s the latest from master blender Allen Smith, Black Barrel is a small batch and a handcrafted blend of matured double pot distillates and aged column distillates. In a process called “Finishing” the already blended rum is matured for another time in deeply charred Bourbon oak barrels. This process releases balanced and bold spicy aromas.
A Time And a Place
Every great story begins with a time and a place. For Mount Gay Rum that time and place is the Caribbean Island of Barbados in 1703. Rum, originally called “Kill-Devil” by the Barbadians who first distilled it, is truly a product of the island. The abundance of molasses combined with the culinary ingenuity of early settlers and, of course, their legendary thirst for alcohol lead to this unique discovery in the production of spirits.
Aromas: Complex notes of spice, toasted wood, followed by fruit.
Taste: Bold spice balanced with oaky vanilla and sweet caramel.
Body: Warm medium body with long finish.
